Risk Factors

Several factors may increase a man’s chances of getting prostate cancer:

  • Race. Prostate cancer is less common among Caucasian men than among African American men. African American men, along with Jamaican men of African descent, have the highest incidence rates of prostate cancer in the world2 (The cancer is more common in North America and northwestern Europe. It is less common in Asia and South America2)
  • Family history. Patients with a brother or father who had prostate cancer are more likely to get the disease. This is especially true if the relatives were young when they developed prostate cancer.9 Studies in genetics have found that 5% -10% of prostate cancers may be the result of a strong familial genetic link2
  • Age. The older a man gets, the more likely he will be to develop prostate cancer 9
